Totems

$350.00
SOLD

For this commission, the client asked that the design revolve around three ceremonial masks from her native tribe in Gabon that she provided as inspiration. I named this piece “Totems” because the masks and their surrounding motifs are meant to incarnate different traits of humanity and our connection to the earth.

The first mask is a symbol of strength, endurance, fortitude, steadfastness, and intentionality. The second symbolizes youth, abundance, growth, the natural world and our inherent belonging thereto. The third represents beauty, mysticism, the dream world, and the cycles of life set by the hidden power of the moon. I chose to use the masks themselves as seeds, and each’s hair as abstract, linear roots to the wider world and to our deeper selves.
